Simply a type of therapy helping to control your thoughts, emotions, and behaviour.
If you would like professional support, learn more about our CBT therapy in Leeds.
It is a talk therapy!
Let’s break it down…

Cognitive – how we think (does this impact how we feel and act?)
Emotional – how we feel (does this impact how we act and think?)
Behavioural – how we act (through how we feel and think)
These are all interlinked:
Negative thoughts – something that we all can go through. Maybe not feeling like we are enough, feeling hopeless, overwhelmed, trapped? Sound familiar?
CBT takes into account all of this to change your negative perception through your thoughts, emotions and behaviour.
CBT can be used to help a range of mental health conditions. Here are just a few of the many they can help:
- Depression (e.g. seasonal affective depression [SAD])
- Relationships
- Eating disorders (e.g., bulimia, and anorexia)
- Trauma (phobias PTSD)
- Addiction (e.g., alcohol and drug use etc)
Think of it like this:
Your thoughts, emotions and behaviour are all in a mixing bowl to make a cake.
The cake is too salty? This is the negativity through mental illnesses (these negative thoughts emotions and behaviour created through experiences or events)
– We don’t want our cake to be salty.
CBT therapy reduces the negativity through changing perception, allowing for the cake to be sweeter. Sweeter cake, sweeter mind!
It depends on you! CBT therapy is entirely subjective! However, it will usually last:
- 50 minutes
- For 5–20 sessions
- With 1-2 sessions every 2 weeks
It helps you understand yourself and others, cope in various situations and calm your mind.
CBT therapy is collaborative:
- Through mutual agreement and cooperation with you and your therapist.
With this in mind, it can be completed through:
- Thought records
- Worksheets
- Tasks
- Activities
All depending on what you and your therapist agrees is best and suited to you!
Through these tasks, CBT will open an alternative perspective to help you cope with your emotions better through learning and changing the negative aspects into positive ones!
